An extremely similar sofa signed Alexander Roux is featured in "Styles of American Furniture 1860-1960" by Eileen and Richard Dubrow. The sofa is shown at the top of page 37. The only difference is the arms, and I have seen one other version of this sofa with Lions on the arms. I think that someone in the past didn't like the lions on this one and had them cut off. I love this sofa, but as I have too many I have to get rid of one. My husband wanted to get rid of this one and I wanted to get rid of a Jelliff sofa we have, but he won this argument. I hope someone will love it as much as I have!
Not to sound like an annoying drunk at the bar, but those flower carvings look a lot like what I imagine Galusha's work to look like. Please note, however, that I may not have credentials as good as an annoying drunk at the bar in this regard.
I agree. That's a wonderful find. My heart aches over the lost arms, however. On any run-of-the-mill Victorian sofa it wouldn't matter, but for what looks to be a Roux, it is a heartbreaker.
I'd be pulling off the fabric to find that stencil that may be there....
I am going to disagree about the lost pieces on the arms, as time goes along, stuff happens, trust me. As a collector of early american furniture, pieces that are 200-300 years old have had ALOT of stuff happen. Missing feet, replaced tops, rebuilt stretchers, to say nothing of original surface which is mostly a fantasy at that age. All of those condition issues must be accepted by early american collectors. While the missing arm pieces on Kitten's sofa are regrettable, it still remains a very fine example of victoriana built by a noted cabinetmaker. Naturally, that may affect price because the buyer may want to restore those missing pieces.
