Hello,
My memory has failed me. I am looking for a particular style of English sofa popular in the late nineteenth century until about 1920. I cannot remember what they're called. Typically, they are upholstered in velvet, boxy, with arms the same height as the back. The outstanding feature is that the arms are upholstered and hinged--tied with thick, decorative rope to velvet-covered finials on each end of the back. I want to say the name begins with a "C" though I may be wrong. I know, of course, it's not Chesterfield. Could it be Campaign? Any help would be appreciated. I've been collecting English and French antiques for many years and I am very irritated that I can't recall this particular word.
Many thanks,
Joseph

In Australia we call them Genoa sofas. Not sure if that's a colloquial term or not :)
Actually, forgive me. I didn't read your whole post and clearly a Genoa is not what you're describing at all. Sorry!
Thank you, Kate. That puts us one step closer. :) At least we know what it isn't...
These two reference images might help. One is a rather clunky, artless modern adaptation of the theme. The other is labeled as "Empire style."
Hi Joesph-
Everything I could find referred to this type of sofa as a "Knole" Sofa - does that sound right?
Hope that helps!
