WOW! VERY RARE PIECE OF HISTORY FOR SALE: 1800?s Outstanding Renaissance Revival Antique Marble Top Table with Great Provenance! The inside of this table is marked ?Grand Central Hotel Omaha?. The Grand Central hotel, in Omaha, Nebraska opened on October 1, 1873, was erected at the southwest corner of 14th and Farnam Streets. Newspaper advertisements claimed the Grand Central to be ?the largest and best hotel between Chicago and San Francisco? (Becker). In the midst of remodeling efforts, the hotel was completely destroyed by fire on September 4-5, 1878. There are many old newspaper articles which state that only a few pieces of furniture were saved from the lower floor of the hotel before it became engulfed in flames. Therefore, this table is a GREAT RARE PIECE OF HISTORY!
The table is made of very fine walnut with wonderful large carved crests on the table skirt with hand carved three dimensional Jenny Lind heads (all wood) with shaped raised burl with incising, and delicate carvings. The table skirt has four carved lady heads ? one on the front, back and both ends of the table. We are attributing this table to John Jelliff who is very famous for this type of furniture with carved lady heads. The wood patina is warm and rich. Circa: 1870?s Dimensions: 29" H x 42 1/2" W x 32 1/2" D Finish: Wood parts are in excellent refinished condition and the white marble top is in good original condition.
