Hello
I lusted after this wine cabinet for years in our local antique auctioneer's office. He sold it to me a few years ago and told me he bought it in a Freeman's Auctions (in PA?)many many years ago. The carving is incredible with little stories being told in different places on the cabinet (birds/snakes/birds fighting snakes/beetles/bacchus/lions). The Stained glass is intact but has buckled due to expansion / contraction. It weighs about 450lbs. Even the removable wooden shelf brackets are well carved and numbered in roman numerals.
I have tried to find out who made this and had no success with Freeman's or the internet. It is obviously old but I do not know how old. I suspect 1890 - 1900 or so. Very solid piece.
Has anyone seen one like this before?
Best Regards

Beautiful cabinet. Do the bottles stand upright on the shelves? Are they original or later replacements?
I have no clue who would have made it but I feel that you pegged the dates correctly. Let me know if you ever want to sell. I'd ditch my Eurocave for it ;)

Thanks for the reply.
The shelves are about 3/8 inch glass but they look to be replacements although they do show some wear and modification. I really do not know how it was shelved but I suspect the bottles were laid down.
There was also 4 1960s/70s fluorescent mini lights that were installed poorly (removed as soon as i got it home). Also, the lock had been replaced with a modern key lock (not the best job).
The shelves are totally adjustable with sawtooth notches top to bottom in all 4 corners. Each of the hand carved wooden supports is a work of art in itself with scroll work and are individually numbered with the roman numerals.
A couple of the clear glass pieces are cracked and the side panels are significantly distorted but it is totally intact. There are a few minor losses to the carvings and a few cracks but overall it is quite spectacular.
Here are some close up photos.
Cheers
