I bought this sofa at an auction. At the auction they attributed the sofa to Jelliff. I'm not sure. Most Jelliff sofas have curved backs and I have't seen many ebonized. Any help would be appreciated. New here and haven't figured out how to post pictures yet. Here is a link…

Doesn't resemble any Jelliff that I know. Since it had a head on the crest, they probably attributed it to Jelliff without much thought, IMHO.
I got a good buy in it so I'm not hurting. If it's not a Jelliff then what might it be?
It doesn't look like Jelliff to me, either, but it's very nice nevertheless. I'd say northeastern U.S. ca. 1870, but in the absence of a label or catalog I.D., it may not be possible to know a maker.
If you get it reupholstered, be sure to study the frame for identifying marks.

I agree with your assessment. I have searched hundreds of photos looking for a sofa similar to this one and haven't found one. Years ago I restored a Gothic sofa that was built along the same lines as this one. It had the high spires but was similar in construction.
I am an upholsterer and have been restoring antiques for more than thirty years. I will be doing the work myself and will study the frame carefully. You can follow the progress of the restoration at the link I posted above.
This would be a great piece to place in a foyer of a very large home. That's what happened to the Gothic sofa.
Thanks
