Hi, everyone. The museum I work for just acquired a ca. 1840-50 parlor table attributed to J & JW Meeks, although the label is missing. There is, however, a block letter "M" carved underneath the original marble top. I had read somewhere in my research that the marble companies supplying marble to furniture makers like Meeks and Belter would carve the initials of the furniture maker under the marble pieces to ensure that the correct marble pieces got sent to the correct furniture maker. Unfortunately, I cannot find where I found that information! If that information regarding the marble suppliers IS in fact true, The letter "M" underneath the table would greatly help in correctly attributing the table to Meeks. Can anyone provide me with a reference for this? Thank you!!!
Do you have any pics of the table with up close of the carvings? That would help. Charles.
