I have a third floor dedicated theater/media room that would have technically been a bedroom back in the day. We going to "redo" the room while the projector is getting repaired but we are exploring ideas at the moment for covering the walls and maybe the ceiling. It is currently all plaster painted white. I'm interested in your ideas on what to do.
Here's the criteria for what we need:
- Dark walls/ceiling so that the screen is all that you see when the lights are out for the movie/TV.
- Can't have reflective qualities that would pick up light from the projector and distract the eye in the periphery
- Has to be low to moderate skill required
- I need to run cables to 4 rear speakers so options such as wood paneling are appealing since I think I could install that in a way that there is space between the paneling and the true wall. However, since it is the third floor, it is easy to run cables into the ceiling/attic and down the walls behind the lath/plaster, so having a built in cable "run" is not a high priority.
- My house is 1887/Victorian so I want something that wouldn't look too out of place
- We have deep window wells that go all the way to the floor and stop 1 foot from the ceiling with a round wood edging. See pic.
Our thoughts are to make it easy and just paint, but there's also the wood paneled library look that is also an appealing approach. I'm interested in other thoughts or variations.

I don't think Belter or Meeks ever made a recliner in the Rococo style for your theater seating but here's a link to some decent looking retro styled theater seating http://tinyurl.com/awghpo.
Here are some higher end/ classical(ish) room designs for home theaters (in several posts due to the 8 pic. limit) - although none are particularly Victorian (although neither is the concept of a home theater). Tiered seating is common if more than one row of seats are used. Patterned/ printed carpets are a nice touch (soft surfaces -like carpet help w/ acoustics and absorb noises rather than bounce it around like hard surfaces will), paneled walls are a nice touch too w/ accent colors or wallpapers - could be as simple as applying mouldings directly to flat walls to create the paneled affect. The first picture shows the speakers nicely hidden in a column.

Thanks a lot Woodwright. A few of these have inspired some thoughts ... and budget nightmares.
