Being lovers of Victorian architecture and design, we have tried to recreate a New Victorian house based on the plans from a Victorian house built in Kansas City in 1885. Here is a link to the original Kansas city house, with is in need of restoration and is now for sale: http://tinyurl.com/ybqq7ns Here is a link to our project. www.castlevictorian.com You will notice that we flipped the plan, but that we kept with the theme. We started our project from two drawings in a book and were not able to find the house in KC until this past month, seven years after completing our house. An avid Victorian house buff, who lives a few blocks form the house in KC, saw our website and sent us a link to the KC house. He also informed us that a sister house was built in St. Cloud Minnesota, and it still stands. We have ben in contact with the owners of that house. The web makes it a much smaller world indeed.
What kind of expense, or what percentage of your budget went to recreating all the custom woodwork? Did you hire an artisan woodworker? How did you go about having it recreated?
The interior trim work including the doors and cabinets represented the single largest expense in building this house, on the order of 20% of the overall cost not including the land. We didn't anticipate it to be so expensive, mostly because our trim carpenter was excellent at every aspect except for his time estimates. It is very difficult to find true craftsmen, and this guy was certainly one of the best around.
Several new pages have been added to the www.castlevictorian.com web site, including a new tab that details the construction costs for this project. Yes, the total cost is listed, but the interesting information is the breakdown of the individual construction components.
Great site...this is a really valuable resource even for those who are restoring an old house. Any chance that you might add a list of material sources (tile, bathroom fixtures, light fixtures, roof cresting, wallpaper, etc...where not antique)?
Great job on those chimneys!

I will give this some thought. I haven't really wanted to make the site appear to be a commercial venture. I have listed a few suppliers in the text. I will see how many I can pull together and give it some thought.

I have added a page that lists some of the victorian specific suppliers. I will try and locate a few additional names that were not readily handy. I also had a request for wallpaper patterns, so they are listed there as well. www.castlevictorian.com

I have been working on our site, www.castlevictorian.com for some time now. I was adding new material at a pretty constant rate for awhile, and now that the site is fairly mature, I am wondering what additional content viewers might find compelling. Please take a look and either post your ideas here, or send them through the comments link on the site. Thanks, Don
The www.castlevictorian website now includes lots of new and larger photos and a link to a video tour. Our Old-New house story continues, take a look.
Our New-Old Victorian house is now FOR SALE. www.castlevictorian.com Take the video tour... Read the background story.
This "not FOR SALE" must be some sort of typing parapraxis.
Yeah, hmmmm......curious. ???
I have corrected the post above, it was a typo. I guess my fingers really don't want to move ;)
